In a national survey of sexual attitudes and lifestyles conducted in 2000, an equal proportion of men and women said they had ‘had a same sex partner in the last five years’ (about 5% in total).

Commitment

In Coventry, member organisations of the Coventry Partnership have given their commitment to creating a city in which each person is treated as an individual and with dignity and respect for their differences, including their sexual orientation.

Consultation

In 2004, a consultation was undertaken in the city to establish what the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual communities think about life in Coventry and how it cold be made fairer and more inclusive.

  • locally-based support organisations estimate the proportion of gay and lesbian people in Coventry is in line with the national average
  • a 2004 Coventry survey showed that:
    • two-thirds of respondents thought Coventry was not very gay-friendly
    • anti-discrimination policies should be implemented in all Coventry’s organisations
    • there is a need for more information about equal opportunities policies and principles
    • there is a need to raise awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues among employees and employers in the city
